Every year, thousands of vehicles in the UK fail their MOT for issues that could easily be fixed ahead of time. Preparing in advance is not only cost-effective, but also helps avoid the inconvenience of retests or being off the road. Here’s what you should check before heading to the test centre.

1. Lights and Bulbs
Faulty lights are the most common MOT failure. Check all exterior lights — including indicators, brake lights, and number plate lights. Replace any faulty bulbs, which can often be done at home.

2. Tyres
Ensure your tyres have at least 1.6mm of tread depth and are free from visible damage. Uneven wear might indicate a suspension or alignment issue, which should also be addressed.

3. Windscreen and Wipers
Your windscreen should be free from large chips or cracks in the driver’s line of vision. Wiper blades must effectively clear water, and the washer fluid reservoir should be topped up.

4. Brakes
If your brakes squeak, grind, or feel spongy, get them checked before the test. Brake issues are not only MOT failures but major safety hazards.

5. Mirrors and Number Plates
All mirrors must be securely fitted and undamaged. Number plates must be clean, properly attached, and legible — with correct spacing and font.

6. Warning Lights
If your dashboard is showing any warning lights, get them diagnosed and repaired. Even if the car seems fine, a lit engine light can cause an automatic fail.

7. Seatbelts and Horn
Make sure seatbelts are fully functional and retract smoothly. Also, test the horn to ensure it works — it’s a simple fix that many overlook.

A pre-MOT check, whether done yourself or at a local garage, can help you avoid failure and reduce the need for a costly retest. A little preparation goes a long way.
